Belém is where Portugal’s grand ambitions took physical form. The Jerónimos Monastery, funded by spice trade wealth, is arguably the most beautiful building in the country. The riverside walk past the Tower of Belém connects five centuries of history in a single afternoon. And yes — the custard tarts at Pastéis de Belém are worth every minute of the queue.

Local Tips

What Locals Want You to Know

1

Book Jerónimos tickets online. This is the single most important advance booking for any Lisbon trip. Peak season queues are 1–2 hours.

2

Take the train from Cais do Sodré, not Tram 15E. It’s faster (7 min vs 25 min) and less crowded. Trains run every 20 minutes.

3

The 24-hour transport pass (€7.25) pays for itself on a Belém day — covers train/tram both ways plus unlimited metro.

4

Torre de Belém interior is overrated. The exterior is the iconic shot. Save your time for Jerónimos and MAAT.

5

LX Factory is best on weekday afternoons. The Sunday market is popular but crowded. Landeau Chocolate has Lisbon’s best chocolate cake.
